Thursday 21st May 2026: 7.30 pm: The Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House.
The 1794 Battle of the Glorious First of June was the first fleet action of the French Revolutionary Wars and was the culmination of a campaign of interception in the Eastern Atlantic. Admiral Lord Howe attempted to prevent the passage of a vital French grain convoy from the United States and the two forces clashed 400 miles west of Ushant. Our Speaker, Society Member John Flynn, examines Howe’s innovative tactics, but also the confusion they caused amongst his Captains.
Free admission to Society members, £4 admission by donation for visitors.
