The Newcastle upon Tyne Royal Grammar School The Annual Collingwood Lecture, this year to be delivered by retired surgeon and renowned Napoleonic era historian Mr Michael Crumplin FRCS (Eng and Ed), FRHistS, FINS, FHS is on the theme ‘Naval Surgery during the French Wars 1792-1815’.  Not to be missed, but it might be prudent to consider delaying your evening meal…

Trinity House, Newcastle upon Tyne ‘Lt. John Lapenotière and HMS PICKLE’  – deliverers of Admiral Collingwood’s dispatches, via Falmouth, to their Lordships at the Admiralty following the Battle of Trafalgar.   The man, his ship and his place in history are examined by Capt. Stephen Healy.

City Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne ‘The Newcastle that Collingwood knew…’ –  a short walk around old Newcastle under the guidance of local historian and TV personality John Grundy.  Details to follow.  Walking involved, but at a ‘pleasant pace’ with frequent stops to hear John pronounce on one of his favourite themes – his adopted City in times gone by.

Tynemouth Monument The annual ‘Toast the Admiral’ event, hosted by North Tyneside Council.  On the midday hour, at which the first shot was fired in the Battle of Trafalgar, raise a glass to our hero.  Free grog, additional refreshments in the TVLB watch-house afterwards.  Public event.

Trinity House, Newcastle upon Tyne ‘Do you anchor Hardy?’  Society member and naval architect David Byrne tackles the hotly debated merits of Nelson’s dying instructions to anchor the fleet and Collingwood’s decisions to run for Gibraltar instead.

– Most regular talks and other events carry a £3 admission fee for non-members unless alternative arrangements are indicated above. The £3 admission charge will be refunded if the person joins the Society on the night.– Every effort has been made to list the anticipated times, venues and speakers, based on information available at the time of publication. The Society’s officers accept no liability for changes which may occur through circumstances beyond their control. Any such changes will be advised to all online members by e-mail and published on the Society’s website as soon as known. If time permits, those not online will be advised by letter.

– Flyers will be circulated in advance of meetings. Details can be verified by telephone call to either the Secretary (Dr. Tony Barrow) on 01665-576716 or the Chairman (Capt. Stephen Healy) on 0191-2159356.

– Trinity House Newcastle (postcode NE1 3DQ) is in Broad Chare, off Newcastle’s Quayside, behind the Law Courts. The Q2 Quaylink bus runs from the City Centre to the Quayside at regular intervals, or parking is recommended at the Quayside car park (free after 5pm).

– The Royal Grammar School (postcode NE2 4DX) is located in Eskdale Terrace, very close to Jesmond Metro Station in Newcastle; parking is normally available on site, courtesy of the school, but this will be confirmed prior to any event.

– The Collingwood Monument and Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House (postcode NE30 4DD) are located at the river mouth and accessed via Tynemouth village. Buses run from Newcastle centre to the village. Two car parks are close by out on the headland and buses and the Metro run to Tynemouth village from Newcastle.

– Morpeth Town Hall (postcode NE61 1LZ) is located in the Market Square, Morpeth Collingwood House (postcode NE61 1QF) is within easy walking distance. Trains run to Morpeth from Newcastle, or parking is recommended in the various public car parks around the town. Collingwood House is within easy walking distance.

– The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas (postcode NE1 1PF) is located in Collingwood Street, Newcastle upon Tyne and is within walking distance of Central Station. Parking is recommended at Dene Street Car Park (NCP charges apply).

– The St. Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead (opposite the West entrance to the Sage Gateshead, besides the Tyne Bridge).
