On 14th March 1757, the Royal Navy executed an Admiral. One of their own. Tonight’s talk by Society member Tim Gittins, examines the case of Admiral John Byng RN, who was shot a firing squad of Marines aboard HMS MONARCH. History tends towards Byng being a scapegoat, but the case was more complex and drew many prominent figures into it at the time. This should be a most interesting dissection of one of the darker episodes in the history of the Royal Navy.
