Thursday 30th January: The Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House: 7.30 pm
Society trustee and regular speaker Dr Tony Barrow opens this year’s programme with the story of the ‘Terra Australis’ expedition. The second voyage was of particular interest for a number of reasons: Cook took with him on this trip an accurate chronometer, enabling him to determine the hitherto unknown longitude of many of the Pacific island groups. Seeking the fabled ‘southern continent’, he also took the RESOLUTION across the Antarctic Circle, narrowly missing out on discovering Antarctica. Plenty of interesting detail can be anticipated, as always.
