Collingwood biographer and Society member Max Adams presents new insights into our Admiral from his private and public correspondence.
In much the same way as social media is used by politicians, celebrities and others in the public eye today, Collingwood lived in a time when his letters would have been written with a knowledge, or at least suspicion, that they could reach wider eyes than those of the intended reipient. The opinions he expressed and the situations he described in his letters therefore help us add to the picture we have of the man and his life.
This is likely to be an interesting postscript to Max’s 2005 work ‘Admiral Collingwood- Nelson’s Own Hero’…. or is it just another chapter?
